How to Remove Tough Stains from Clothes — A Complete Guide

We’ve all been there. A splash of coffee on a white shirt before an important meeting. A curry stain on your favourite Kandura. Red sauce on a child’s school uniform minutes before the school run. Stains are an unavoidable part of life — but knowing how to deal with them quickly and correctly can mean the difference between saving a garment and losing it.

This guide covers the most common tough stains and the best approach to treating each one — including when it’s time to hand the job to the professionals.

The Golden Rule — Act Fast

Before we get into specific stains, the single most important principle in stain removal is speed. The longer a stain sits in a fabric, the more it bonds with the fibres — and the harder it becomes to remove.

As soon as a stain happens:

  1. Blot — never rub. Rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it deeper into the fabric
  2. Work from the outside edge inward to prevent spreading
  3. Remove any solid residue gently before treating the liquid
  4. Check the garment care label before applying any treatment

1. Coffee and Tea Stains

One of the most common stains in Dubai — especially on white Kanduras and work shirts.

How to treat it:

  • Act immediately — blot up as much liquid as possible
  • Rinse with cold water from the back of the fabric to push the stain out
  • Apply a small amount of liquid detergent and work gently into the stain
  • Leave for 5 minutes before rinsing
  • Wash on a cool cycle

What to avoid:

  • Hot water sets coffee stains permanently — always use cold water first
  • Don’t dry the garment until the stain is fully gone — heat from a dryer will set it

2. Oil and Grease Stains

Common on clothing after cooking, eating, or working — particularly difficult because water alone won’t touch them.

How to treat it:

  • Sprinkle cornstarch, talcum powder, or baking soda onto the stain immediately to absorb the oil
  • Leave for 15–30 minutes, then brush off gently
  • Apply a small amount of dish soap directly to the stain — dish soap is designed to cut through grease
  • Work in gently with your fingers or a soft brush
  • Rinse with warm water and wash as normal

For set-in grease stains: Apply dish soap and leave for an hour before washing. Older grease stains may require a specialist degreasing pre-treatment or professional cleaning.

3. Red Wine Stains

A nightmare on light-coloured fabrics — but treatable if you act quickly.

How to treat it:

  • Blot up as much wine as possible immediately — do not rub
  • Pour cold sparkling water or still water directly onto the stain to dilute it
  • Sprinkle salt generously over the stain to absorb the remaining liquid
  • Leave for a few minutes, then brush off the salt
  • Apply a mixture of dish soap and hydrogen peroxide (for white or light fabrics only) and leave for 20 minutes
  • Rinse thoroughly and wash on a cool cycle

For dark fabrics: Skip the hydrogen peroxide — it can bleach darker colours. Use a specialist stain remover instead and test on a hidden area first.

4. Curry and Turmeric Stains

Particularly relevant in Dubai where food culture is rich and varied — and turmeric is one of the most stubborn stains known to fabric.

How to treat it:

  • Remove any solid curry residue carefully without spreading
  • Rinse immediately with cold water from the back of the fabric
  • Apply liquid detergent and work gently into the stain
  • For turmeric specifically — sunlight is a natural bleaching agent. After treating, leave the damp garment in direct sunlight for a few hours
  • Wash on a cool cycle and check before drying

Important: Turmeric stains are notoriously difficult and may require multiple treatments. For heavily stained garments or delicate fabrics, professional cleaning is strongly recommended.

5. Blood Stains

Act immediately — cold water is essential here.

How to treat it:

  • Rinse immediately with cold water — never hot, which sets blood permanently
  • For fresh stains, cold water alone may be enough
  • Apply a small amount of liquid detergent or a paste of salt and cold water
  • Work gently and rinse thoroughly
  • Wash on a cold cycle

For dried blood stains: Soak the garment in cold salted water for several hours before treating. Dried blood is significantly harder to remove and may require professional treatment for delicate fabrics.

6. Ink Stains

Ballpoint pen on a shirt pocket is one of the most common work-related stains.

How to treat it:

  • Place a clean cloth or paper towel under the stained area
  • Apply rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) or hand sanitiser directly to the stain
  • Blot — do not rub — and you’ll see the ink transferring to the cloth below
  • Replace the cloth as it absorbs ink and continue until no more transfers
  • Wash as normal

For felt-tip or permanent marker: These are significantly harder to remove and often require specialist professional treatment. Act as quickly as possible.

7. Sweat Stains

Particularly relevant in Dubai’s heat — sweat stains on collars and underarms are a very common problem, especially on white Kanduras and shirts.

How to treat it:

  • Mix white vinegar with water (1:1 ratio) and soak the stained area for 30 minutes
  • Alternatively, make a paste of baking soda and water and apply to the stain
  • Leave for 30 minutes before washing on a warm cycle
  • For yellowed white fabric, a specialist white fabric detergent used regularly helps prevent buildup

Prevention tip: Wearing an undershirt in Dubai’s heat reduces direct contact between perspiration and your outer garments — significantly extending the life of your Kanduras and dress shirts.

8. Makeup Stains

Foundation, lipstick, and mascara are common culprits — especially on light-coloured clothing.

For foundation and liquid makeup:

  • Scrape off any excess without spreading
  • Apply micellar water or makeup remover to the stain and blot gently
  • Follow with liquid detergent before washing

For lipstick:

  • Apply a small amount of dish soap and work gently
  • Rinse and repeat if needed before washing

For mascara:

  • Use an oil-based remover to break down the product
  • Follow with dish soap before washing

When to Call the Professionals

Some stains — and some garments — are simply beyond safe home treatment. Knowing when to stop and hand the job over is as important as knowing how to treat a stain in the first place.

Always seek professional help for:

  • Delicate fabrics — silk, chiffon, velvet, cashmere
  • Embellished garments — embroidered Abayas, beaded pieces
  • Set-in stains that haven’t responded to home treatment
  • Large or multiple stains across a garment
  • Dry-clean only garments — attempting home treatment can cause irreversible damage
  • Expensive or sentimental pieces where the risk isn’t worth taking

At Wash Masters, our team assesses each garment individually and applies the most appropriate treatment for the stain, fabric, and care requirements. We use industry-leading stain removal products and professional equipment to achieve results that home treatment simply cannot.

A Note on Dubai’s Climate

Dubai’s heat and humidity create specific challenges for stain removal. Sweat is more prevalent, stains dry faster and set more quickly in the heat, and certain fabrics are more vulnerable to the combination of sun exposure and perspiration.

This makes quick action even more important in Dubai than in cooler climates — and it makes regular professional laundering a practical investment rather than a luxury.
