The Truth: Heat Is the Real Culprit
Shrinkage happens when fibers contract, and that’s driven almost entirely by heat, not water. Natural fibers like cotton and wool contain tiny coiled structures that relax and expand when the garment is manufactured and stretched. Heat causes those fibers to spring back toward their original, tighter shape — which is exactly why a hot wash or, more commonly, a hot tumble dryer is usually the real reason a garment comes out smaller.
Cold and lukewarm washes rarely cause noticeable shrinkage on their own. It’s the dryer — especially on a high-heat setting — that does most of the damage, since the intense, sustained heat combined with tumbling accelerates fiber contraction far more than a wash cycle does.
Why Some Fabrics Shrink More Than Others
Not all clothing is equally at risk. A few materials are especially heat-sensitive:
- Cotton — prone to shrinking, particularly on the first few washes, because the fibers haven’t fully “relaxed” yet.
- Wool — extremely sensitive to heat and agitation together, which is why wool sweaters can shrink dramatically in a hot wash or dryer.
- Rayon and viscose — can shrink or warp even at moderate heat, since these fibers are especially unstable when wet and heated.
Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon, on the other hand, are far more heat-resistant and generally hold their shape unless exposed to very high temperatures.
How to Prevent Shrinkage
The fix isn’t avoiding the washing machine altogether — it’s controlling the heat at every stage:
- Wash in cold or lukewarm water rather than hot, especially for cotton, wool, and viscose.
- Check the care label before drying. A “tumble dry low” or “line dry” instruction exists specifically to prevent shrinkage.
