It’s one of the most repeated pieces of laundry advice out there: wash on hot to kill germs. Many people set every load — towels, sheets, gym clothes, even delicates — to the hottest setting their washing machine offers, assuming it’s the only way to actually sanitize their clothes.
So is it true? The answer is: partly fact, mostly myth — and the real story is more useful than the simple version most people believe.
Where the Myth Comes From
The idea isn’t baseless. Heat does kill bacteria and viruses — that’s basic microbiology. Boiling water and high-heat sterilization are genuinely effective disinfection methods in medical and food safety settings. It’s easy to see how that logic got carried over to household laundry.
The problem is the temperature required to reliably kill most germs is far higher than what a typical home washing machine reaches — and far higher than most fabrics can actually tolerate.
What the Science Actually Says
To meaningfully reduce bacteria and viruses through heat alone, water generally needs to reach 60°C (140°F) or higher, sustained for a period of time. Most home washing machines’ “hot” setting runs closer to 40-50°C (104-122°F) — hot enough to feel like a strong wash, but well below true disinfection temperature for most pathogens.
At the same time, most modern detergents are formulated to work effectively in cold or warm water. The combination of detergent, mechanical agitation, and rinsing does the majority of the actual cleaning — physically lifting dirt, oils, and many germs off fabric and washing them away, regardless of water temperature.
So for everyday laundry, cold and hot water often perform similarly well at basic cleanliness — because the real work is being done by the detergent and the wash cycle, not the heat.
When Hot Water Actually Matters
Hot water isn’t useless — it has specific, legitimate uses:
- Illness in the household. If someone has been sick, washing their sheets, towels, and clothing on the hottest setting the fabric allows can help reduce viral and bacterial load.
- Heavily soiled items. Cloth diapers, contaminated linens, or heavily stained workwear benefit from higher heat combined with detergent.
- Oil and grease stains. Hot water helps break down oil-based stains more effectively than cold water.
- Whites and heavy cottons. Hot water can help keep white fabrics brighter over time, though this is more about stain and residue removal than germ-killing.
When Cold Water Is the Better Choice
- Delicates, silk, and wool — hot water causes shrinking, warping, and fiber damage
- Colored and dark fabrics — hot water accelerates color fading and bleeding
- Activewear and moisture-wicking fabrics — heat breaks down the elastic fibers and performance coatings
- Everyday, lightly worn clothing — cold water cleans effectively without the wear and tear of repeated heat exposure
Cold water also has a practical upside: it’s significantly gentler on fabric over time, meaning clothes last longer and colors stay truer wash after wash.

Hot water can help kill more germs — but only at temperatures higher than most home machines and most fabrics can handle. For everyday laundry, the disinfecting difference between hot and cold is much smaller than people assume, since detergent and the wash cycle itself do most of the actual cleaning.
